| A combination of punk rock and hardcore music styles are the basis of the EMO subculture. The term "emocore" originates from emotional hardcore and is believed to have appeared the middle of the Eighties.
The first emocore representatives of the subculture began to add melodic features to their tunes. Sorrow, love, sense of guilt are the main topics of their tunes. So, the emo style could be defined as rock with emotional lyric elements. However, the definition of the emo style is still a matter for debate.
Even though the emo subculture was originally referred to as a music genre, at present it is referred not only to music, but also to conduct, fashion, style and the way of life.
The emo style is characterised as unfashionable. This way emo representatives demonstrate that they are uninterested in social processes. Emos consider themselves outcasts and, thus, display their non-conformity to existing social rules and standards through the emo subculture. They prefer skinny jeans, sometimes in bright colours, and tight-fitting T-shirts, with names of emocore bands printed on them. Studded belts and black wristbands are usual accessories in the emo fashion. Piercing is also popular with emos. Black Converse sneakers are typically worn by emos. Some males also prefer thick black horn-rimmed glasses.
The emo fashion is also known for its hairstyles. Popular looks are long side-swept bangs, sometimes covering one or both eyes. Straightened and coloured black hair is also a part of the emo fashion. Blue, red, pink or blond highlights are very trendy. Short choppy layers of hair are also common. Occasionally this style has been characterised as a fad. In the early 2000s, the emo fashion was associated with an impeccable look, but as the style spread to young people, it became darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the colour black superseding sweater vests.
Emo representatives are highly sensitive people. Specialists consider them introverts who are unwilling to socialise with the world around. Instead, they express their standpoints by means of poetry. Poems they write are full of sorrow, nostalgia and desperation. Normally these emotions are characteristic of young people aged 12 - 18, when they are emotionally sensitive. For many emo representatives emoism becomes a way of life. |
